Rent is usually paying for someone’s mortgage for them, why would they make it lower? Who are these generous landlords?

Ahhh, there’s the misunderstanding. Local/single owner rentals are actually a small proportion of tenancies. Most are large organizations which have purchased a large building etc. It’s actually a kind of fascinating issue but worth reading about!

If I borrow a half million from the bank, I have to pay it back in monthly installments, commonly known as a mortage. Those costs are now added to your regular expenses.

Most rents are cheaper than mortages. So taking on a giant purchase + the cost of the mortage is a huge financial cost. Yes, she gets an asset (which she could sell at any point) but it’s going to be more expensive.

A quick look at Denver apartments for rent confirms this, a lot of 1 bedrooms available for between $400 and $500 cheaper a month.

I think it particularly suits OP as the prose is astoundingly good. I’d never been impressed by sentence structure until reading Pratchett.

Also, for someone into non-fiction, there’s so much real world brilliance that it crosses over pretty well. (Sociology, science, politics, religion, damnit, everything. The whole human experience can be found in Pratchett’s writing.)

It’d be weird after half a century of tv, if suddenly in the 2010s it somehow escalated all the self harm/suicide stats.

Not flaccid, I want crispy edges but goddamn, bacon you can sit and chew for awhile is amazing. Burnt/“crispy” bacon just crumbles and, in my possibly tapeworm adled brain, deprives you of sweet bacony goodness.

Basically like most said, schools are woefully underfunded. Most often, they are mostly funded at the local level which screws them. Poor places have less money for school, thus making the cycle of poverty harder to break out of. Rich places have loads of money so intergenerational wealth persists. Medium income tend to fight any tax increase. (And if education matters to you, better to fight a tax increase and just send your kid to a private one)

I think you’re misunderstanding my point.

You can still use reddit for free, that won’t change. That is because to reddit you are cattle, the product, what is being sold.

And as long as you are a product, reddit is going to extract as much value from you as they can. It’s why their valuation is in the billions, you are lucrative cattle. And qs someone who has wrangled that cattle, spez is taking his cut.

These are sites premised on free labour but the end user pays nothing to enjoy the site.

As much value is created by those volunteers, the operating/dev costs are very real and can’t just be hand waved away.

Probably very unpopular thoughts but…

A) How many of us wouldn’t angle for an almost 200 million dollar payout? Seriously? All of us are too good for that?

B) Social media like reddit is basically free for users and costs way more than most of us could afford to run. We probably need to figure out some middle ground where people expect to pay a few pennies for something they use for hours a day. Unfortunately, advertising etc has conditioned/conned people into thinking everything should be “free” and with ads.

Canadian here. If I call in, pick it up then yeah, about 10 is my general go to. They’re in my neighbourhood, I like them and I’ll spend more than that on an unnecessary beer without thinking.

I’ve seen a lot of good places go under, I’ll do my small part to help keep places I like in business. Admittedly, while I’m not rich a few extra bucks here and there to people busting their asses isn’t a backbreaker. (Worked in kitchens, am not a hard enough worker for that ever again. Mad respect for those who do.)

I just feel bad for y’all. Most Americans I’ve met are at least nice people who probably deserve healthcare.
