Literally, you answered your own question. From the user end, unsupported file types of any frequently shared format are garbage. No one cares on the user end about server space. They care about sharing a funny image. They don’t care about 2 extra ms of load speed. They want shit to just work.

A package of skin on chicken thighs doesn’t even need an oil, just throw the skins in the pan. Large bags of rice keep nicely in 5 gal buckets.

And this is unrelated to changing to changing their rolls and low quality service? We quit going because the price was fine dining, and the experience was a low quality pub with pasta. Last time I went, wait staff was over taxed and behind on everything, no local beer of any sort, extra crowded, and they had changed their cheddar biscuit recipe to something super dry. All of that for $100 date night. The noodles were ok, I guess.
