      The US women’s team did play extremely well in the 2019 world cup. You guys handed us our asses in the finals.

      It’s quite a drop from winners of the world cup to dropping out in the first round

        Oh, the women’s team is excellent, the nottheonion part is the headline implying the future of the United States is just now uncertain after losing a a world cup early. The future has been uncertain for a good while longer for much different reasons :')

      Yes, and now the headline is "the future for the United States is uncertain " after losing a sports game. It’s in hilariously bad taste considering literally everything else

        Seems clear that in context it’s referring to the national team, not the nation itself. This is common in football/soccer.
